Depending on the size of the train there will be fewer or more plentiful seating options: larger trains have more seating varieties because they have more room. Grades of seating normally range from coach to first class.
Coach seats are typical train seats; they come complete with leg rests to make long trips more comfortable. Fold-down tables and reading lights are also usually included with coach seats. These seats usually have to be reserved, but on some trains coach seats are filled on a first-come first-served basis. A few trains also offer a lower level of coach seats for less money.
Business class seats are almost always reserved and come with a few additional amenities such as individual air conditioners, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages, and conference tables. The seats themselves also are a bit more luxurious.
First class offers every comfort so that passengers are lavishly spoiled. The seats are spacious with movable arm and footrests, and delicious meals are complimentary along with alcohol. Some trains may even have hot towel service and at-seat attendant service for those willing to shell out the extra bucks.
If you get on the train and decide you’d like to upgrade, speak with the person in charge of onboard services. As long as the trip isn’t sold out upgrades are usually available to passengers.
Trains that go long distances are generally equipped with sleeping room accommodations. These are usually charged as an add-on to normal rail fares so travelers still buy seating on the train. Rooms vary from those that comfortably accommodate two adults to those that fit four adults. Those traveling with friends may also be able to get two regular size bedrooms (those built to accommodate two people) and combine them to create a bedroom suite. Some rooms have toilets and showers and some do not, so depending on the length of your trip you should consider whether you need them in your room. Sometimes purchasing the “sleeper” add-on can entitle train guests to additional amenities such as first-class service or linen services. |
